Archbishop Óscar Romero
Óscar Romero, born August 15th, 1917, was the Archbishop of San Salvador and a prominent spiritual leader during El Salvador’s mid-century resistance to the ruling military junta.

Originally a moderate, Romero was radicalized by the assassination of his close friend Rutilio Grande by Salvadoran security forces in 1977. From then until his own assassination in March of 1980, Romero became a globally renowned figurehead in the movement to end the military dictatorship. His spiritual advocacy for the democratization of El Salvador was rooted within the context of liberation theology.
