From 2014-17, Tusk led Uber’s efforts to pass carve-outs in labour regulations that could classify the company’s drivers as independent contractors instead of workers, allowing them to bypass welfare and wage protections. His 2018 book, The Fixer: My Adventures Saving Startups From Death by Politics boasted of his tactics to help Uber evade regulations. In exchange for his role, Tusk was compensated with equity in the company, which was estimated to be worth $100 million.
In 2009, Tusk helped incumbent New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg rewrite the city charter to allow him to serve a third term, and served as his campaign manager for the latter’s successful re-election bid, where Bloomberg ran as a Republican candidate. Prior to this, Tusk served as Deputy Governor of Illinois, and Communications Director for Democratic US Senator Chuck Schumer.
