Eduardo Bolsonaro has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2015 and is affiliated with the far-right Social Liberal Party (PSL). In 2018, he won a seat representing Sao Paulo with a record 1.8 million votes. That same year, his father was elected as President and he helped run a propaganda campaign against Lula da Silva, alongside his brother Carlos. In 2019, President Bolsonaro attempted to name him as Brazil’s ambassador in Washington but was forced to back down due to doubts over his competency and suspected nepotism.

In February 2019, it was reported that Bolsonaro was joining The Movement, a Brussels-based organization that served to help right-wing nationalists gain more parliamentary recognition. It was founded by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, who named Bolsonaro representative for the group in Latin America.

In October 2019, he threatened to introduce a new “AI-5,” or Institutional Act Number Five, referring to the decree from the 1964-85 dictatorship which enforced censorship against left-wing opposition and gave the military legal powers to shut down protests, Congress and the state.

In 2020, Bolsonaro signed the Madrid Charter, a document drafted by the far-right Spanish party Vox to unite conservatives in the Ibero-Americas. He signed the document along with Santiago Abascal, Argentina’s Javier Milei, Chile’s José Antonio Kast and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni of Italy. Eduardo has served as the link between the Bolsonaro family and the global far-right – he was a featured guest at CPAC events in São Paulo, Hungary, DC, and Mexico City.
